IFAV - practical

The Institute for Applied Consumer Research (IFAV) is an autonomous institute dedicated to serving the interests of the consumer with practical research.
It is always on hand, when, for example, consumer-related problems need solving – for instance at the interface between supplier and consumer. This includes market surveys on the quantity and quality of products and services on offer. It investigates facts and phenomena of relevance to the consumer on, for example

  • the quality of technical advice in individual branches,
  • the ecological aspects of products,
  • terms and prices in individual branches, and
  • information provided in individual branches.

IFAV - informative

The IFAV develops information material for multipliers as a base for their counselling of consumers themselves. It supports the work of consumer organisations with market investigations on, for example, compliance with legal requirements and the advertising practises of trade and industry, and collects structural data on consumer counselling.
The IFAV examines fundamental social and economic questions on the consumer and consumption with the aim of, for example, sustaining consumption or improving market transparency.

Its circle of co-operation partners includes the umbrella association of consumer organisations in Germany, the Verbraucherzentrale Bundesverband (vzbv), Berlin; the Stiftung Warentest, Berlin; the European umbrella association of consumer consumer organisations, BEUC, Brussels; consumer organisations in other European countries and Consumer International, London, as world-wide umbrella association of consumer organisations.

IFAV - since 1965

The institute was founded by consumer organisations in 1965 and has the legal form of a registered non-profit society. Its members are natural persons and legal entities that actively promote consumer research, consumer policy and consumer counselling. The IFAV does not in the first instance pursue its own economic interests.
